Listening to guitarist Rick Holmstrom this evening.  He has recorded a lot fairly traditional blues, but as time has gone by, he has recorded in a wide range of styles.  In recent years, he has been performing with Mavis Staples.

Right now, listening to "Lookout!" from 1995, which is blues instrumentals in pretty traditional styles:

Earlier, listened to "Hydraulic Groove" released in 2002.  I'm not sure exactly what to call it, but has a lot of bluesy material, but with more modern production, including sampling.  When it works, it is pretty cool (my favorite song is "Pee Wee's Nightmare" (probably referencing blues guitarist Pee Wee Crayton) which I think is a pretty creative and effective blending of blues with other elements.

Hope everyone is staying cool (seems like lots of heat this summer).

I have been listening to T-Bone Walker, one of the early adopters of the electric guitar, and a notable vocalist.  The "Complete Capitol/Black & White Recordings" 3-CD set has early recordings from the 1940s:

The band seems pretty sophisticated to me, often including horn sections - this music is blues, but seems "jazz adjacent."  B.B. King said his "biggest musical debt is to T-Bone," and there do seem to be similarities in their approach (like the way their guitar playing often answers their singing.

Also listening to the 2 CD collection "T-Bone Walker - The Complete Imperial Recordings 1950-1954:"

At least for me, this music from 70 to 80 years ago still seems pretty vital!

Fantastic music! I have both those sets, but listen most often to the material in this Mosaic set, sounds a hair better to me:

I think Aaron Thibaux was an amazing artist; his playing influenced my own.

Hi, Lon - T-Bone definitely had a unique sound, including a lot of single note work.  I would not call myself a guitarist, but sometimes I like to "plink" along with single notes with some bends, trying to reflect some of T-Bone's timing!

So thought I would post one more T-Bone Walker CD, "T-Bone Blues" which includes material recorded a few years later in 1955 to 1957:

This includes a couple of songs with some Chicago blues musicians typically associated with Chess Records (Jimmy Rogers on guitar, Junior Wells on harmonica)

Stan Getz/Francy Boland-Kenny Clarke Big Band "Change of Scene" Verve Elite cd

It's been too many years since I spun this one! I remember how exciting these Verve Elite cds were for me when they were introduced!

Some heavy rain this morning! It was a hot night and I got up briefly at 3 but was able to convice Fiona the dachshund to let me go back to sleep.

Starting off with a collection that it dawned on me that I needed and this first disc is killer!

Grateful Dead "30 Trips Around the Sun: The Definitive Live Story 1965–1995" cd 1 of 4.

I never did try to get the full 80 cd set. . . affectionately known as "the porch crusher". . . but I wish I had made the effort.

Hi, Geno.  Sorry the posting process is so convoluted for you.  If I were smarter about the internet I would try and make a suggestion.  I have never seen anything that looked like the forum "timing out" (as it takes me some time to even write a short a post).  Hope you can find the issue to avoid the challenges in posting.

It is nice seeing common points of our musical interests in this community.  There seem to be lots of us listening to a broad a range of music, posting about classical, jazz, blues, bluegrass, popular music (I think you have posted about most or all these genres).

Just to post something related, listening to Booker T and the MGs on "Soul Dressing;"

I especially like the track "Homegrown" on this CD.

Also, just following up on T-Bone Walker, I thought I would post the following link, which is to YouTube video of Alex Schultz performing a live cover of "T-Bone Jumps Again" that I particularly like:

My posting issues are only on my iphone. No problems on a PC.

I think I have found that if I use Google Chrome, I am ok.  I'm on my PC at work at present, but sssshhh, don't tell my boss Grin

Thanks for the video - pretty smokin' band!

I am a YouTube addict, and it is the best tool ever for music lovers.  I'm constantly amazed at what folks have posted. If I look for something obscure, I can usually find it. And bouncing around on it can lead to discovery - I fall down a rabbit hole weekly.

Best,

Geno

Hi, Geno.  I also find YouTube to be a great tool.  I don't have it connected up with my "system," but I do use it various ways, including checking out new music including recordings I see on this music forum), finding live performances of artists that I missed when they were still performing.

I also at times just "wander around" and seeing what I find (which can sometimes be odd, like the Chipmunks performing "I'm Too Sexy for my Shirt" (I will mercifully leave out the link)!

More seriously, did listen to some Sonny Stitt earlier today, on "New York Jazz."
