Modern music for people who don't think they like "modern music." Martinu's magical 1st Symphony from the Bryden Thomson, Scottish National Orchestra cycle.

On CD

Martinu has a unique sound, unlike any other composer I can think of. The sound is tonal but not exactly melodic and based more on harmony and rhythm. I guess "atmospheric" is the word I would use.

If there is a consensus on the "favorite" version of Beethoven's 3rd Symphony it is almost certainly George Szell's. And it is one of my favorite ways to listen to one of my least favorite of LvB's symphonies.

On CD.

All of Szell's Beethoven is reference quality, and his perfect blend of classical elegance and the power and precision of Napoleon's army at Jena makes this an Eroica to remember.

It seems like Robert Shaw gets a bad rap from the critics, probably because he is popular (for a classical choral conductor). But I like his work, and add demonstration quality Telarc sound and I call this a top shelf b minor mass.

I may have mentioned this one before, but anyone who thinks they don't like chamber music in general or string quartets in particular needs to listen to Dvorak's String Quartet #10, The Slavonic. It has plenty of serious composer stuff going on under the surface, but the first impression is as friendly as a happy puppy (apologies to anyone who doesn't like puppies). It is hard to imagine not liking the piece.

16/44 FLAC Download.

It seems a little provincial to say "no one play Dvorak like the Czechs" but my favorite performances are all by Czech quartets like the Prazak so there you have it.

More Dvorak, the Piano Quintet in A from the Andreas Schiff Concertos and Chamber Music Box.

16/44 FLAC Download.

Given the (commercial) death of the classical recording industry it is possible Schiff is one of the last "superstar pianists" created by the record labels. And this is a great box of music from Mozart and Beethoven to Bartok and beyond.

Schonberg for people who don't like Schonberg. The Concerto for Sting Quartet, riffing on Handel's Op.6 No.7 Concerto Grosso.

On CD for the Gerard Schwartz Naxos box.

I hadn't heard this piece until today when I was thumbing thru the above box looking for inspiration. It is similar in feeling to Stravinsky's Pulcinella, in other words leaning much more to the 18th century over the 20th.

There are two Josef Suks in musical history. Suk the younger was a well known violinist in the post-WWII world. Violin isn't my favorite instrument but he made some of favorite violin recordings. His grandfather, Josef Suk, was both a student and a son-in-law of Dvorak. He was (more or less) the next big thing in Czech music between Dvorak and Janacek, and his music is delightful.

16/44 FLAC download.

His piano music reminds me a little of Chopin, which is not a bad thing at all.

I love the Handel Keyboard Suites! And I highly recommend Danny Driver on Hyperion. Gorgeous, dare I say old fashion, piano playing and gorgeous demonstration quality piano sound. It is one of my favorite albums to put on, turn off the lights and let the music wash over me.

I listen to many more "historical" performances than I post about, I guess because I feel like they are a special niche even within the niche of classical music. I certainly appreciate the lifelike sound and avalanche of available music that has come with first the stereo, and now the digital age, but I also feel like something has been lost to progress and global marketing: individuality. Even the limited recorded evidence from the 30s, 40s and into the 50s suggests there was a much wider range of interpretive viewpoints available than exist now, and a lot of it was based on so called "national schools" usually preserved and refined by national conservatories. One such school was Czech, aka Bohemian, that had a unique feel for both tonal colour and interpretation. With that in mind I give you the Prague Conservatory Faculty playing Dvorak's Wind Serenade in d minor, lead by the great Vaclav Talich.

14/44 FLAC download.

Dvorak's Serenade, along with Mozart's and John Phillip Sousa's dozen or so immortal masterpieces are the summit of wind ensemble writing, and the professors at the Prague Conservatory play it like no one else. The sound is pretty good too.

Recent acquisition: Murray Perahia plays some Handel Keyboard Suites, and Scarlatti Sonatas. Given how flavorful is his Bach it is no surprise the Handel is extremely tasty as well. If there is any sort of a problem it is that he didn't record all 8 of them.

Audiophile Brahms:

The Linn recording of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra is outstanding. And the Scottish Chamber Orchestra performances of the Brahms symphonies is outstanding, brisk and transparent.

"Fun" is not a word I would usually use to describe a Bach recording but this one is.

These are arrangements of music by a bunch of Bachs, including Johann Sabastian, his kids and uncles and cousins pretty far out on the family tree.

Beethoven wrote the music for a single ballet in his life, The Creatures of Prometheus, and to me it is pretty unique. It is the one time, besides symphony no. 8, that it seems like he lets his hair down and really has fun, even if it doesn't sound like dance music to me. The overture is often performed, but much less so the rest of the music, which is a shame. And the finale is in fact the first appearance of what is now known as the "Eroica Theme" from the 4th movement of the 3rd symphony, and variations of the that name.

On CD.

There is an old snark among musicians that "a conductor's baton is the cheapest instrument in the orchestra." It is literally true, but also represents the feeling that a lot times the conductor is kinda superfluous. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra proves how true that is, over and over again.

What were you doing as a tweenager? Instead of going to middle school Mendelssohn was writing these String Symphonies. I can't call them great music, but they are delightful and I like them better than anything Mozart wrote at a similar age.

On CD.

If I take the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra box down from the shelves it usually stays down for a while.

One more from the OCO box, Schoeberg's Verklärte Nacht. This is Schoeberg the conservative late romantic, not the atonal musical revolutionary and it is lush and lovely. Esp. in this recording.

My favorite harpsichord music played by my favorite harpsichordist: Zuzana Růžičková playing (some of) the Handel Keyboard Suites. As with Murray Perahia's Handel album above the only possible complaint is she didn't record all of them.

You're very welcome Geno.

And now for my favorite Christmas music, Handel's Messiah as arranged by Mozart.

The critical consensus is Beethoven's "greatest" string quartet is Opus 131 in c# minor. I can't say it is my favorite, but it is clearly an amazing piece of music in both it's intellectual and emotional scope.

16/44 FLAC download.

It sounds like it could have been written yesterday, just as easily as (almost exactly) 200 years ago, esp. the way the Tokyo String Quartet plays it.
