Right. It's a version of the 12AU7 type. Here is the description from the Brent Jesse site:

E80CC / 6085:This unusual European tube is basically an industrial type 6085. However, it's specs are similar enough to a 12AU7 that audiophiles are grabbing them up while the prices are still reasonable. The heater life is rated at 10,000 hours, and some have gold pins. The larger box plate structure gives this tube low microphonics and silky smooth sonics. Some of the Philips Holland versions had the rare pinched waist, where the glass dips inward and actually molds around the top mica plate, giving the plates extra support and virtually eliminating microphonics. There is also a version made at the Amperex factory in Hicksville, NY, which is often priced lower but looks the same and sounds very similar to the Holland version. Since this tube has a much higher Gm and Mu factor than a 12AU7, the gain is going to be greater and this tube will give a more forward presentation. Awesome in phase splitter applications. If in doubt, check with your amp or preamp manufacturer to see if this tube will work OK in your application. This tube is also about twice as tall as a 12AU7, so installation space in your chassis is a consideration as well. These are out of production, rare, and getting very hard to find. The European types usually command the top prices, but USA types exist as the 6085 and should be a bit lower in cost, but they are also rare and climbing in price. Many USA tubes were actually made by the European factories, so watch for the 6085 USA brands!

After several weeks messing around rolling with the RCA 6CG7 Black Plates with center shields in my Torii Jr I have to say they are a very nice tube alternative to 7308, E188CC, 6N23P tubes.  Can’t really say any tubes are really the best they all have their flavors and strengths.  Just a quick listening recap of my tubes on my system.
RCA 6CG7 BP- warm, full sounding with nice detail slightly recessed.  Lower gain needs added gain adjustments from preamp. Not ideal for low volume listening but shines as volume increases. Nice when paired with brighter pre and amp output tubes. My fav warm full sounding machine tube.
Amperex 7308 USN USA made-  Just does everything right.  Not as warm or full sounding as the 6CG7 but has improved clarity, reduced noise and detail.
French Philips E188CC- very similar to my Amperex7308 but has a little extra dynamics and punch that puts smile on. My fav smooth tube.
Refecktor/Voshkod ‘73-75 6N23P SWG- these are yet another step up from the 7308/E188CC’s.  Just more of everything. Clarity, detail, sound stage, best gain and the quietest background.  Great paired with warmer pre or amp output tubes but not necessary. Might say it lacks just a touch of warmth but still my overall fav!  All of these tubes get shared time just depends on the mood and genre.  Fun times.

Nice review of this select group of tubes. I always appreciate how people can put what they hear into words, especially the subtle differences between tubes. Your descriptions got me started, and I found an excellent review from a few years ago that I'll include here for anyone who enjoys reading and listening to some of these differences.

Tony-  Interesting reviews…thanks for sharing!  It’s nice to see my experience was similar.  So many tubes to choose if you can find them and they can be very pricey.  I’ve been fortunate to find some of these tubes used, new testing at good prices.  The fun never ends 🤪

Ordered the 6SN7 to 6922 converters this morning. I have a pair of Ray Tubes RESERVE 6SN7 to try in my ZMA inputs.

Great Thread .....educating myself about the 6CG7.

S of T- Let us know how you like the the 6SN7’s in your 6922 locations.  I use  two at times in my Tori Jr and they sound very good and different than the 6922 family and 6CG7’s.  In my system they have a stronger more full sound with a heavier bass.  Just more meat on the bones per say.  Not quite as detailed and quiet as the 7308’s.  More similar to the sound of the warm 6CG7’s but with more presence. They also have less gain so gain adjustments are needed on my pre and amp.  Have fun with them.

Will do Hearafter. I should have the adapters by Monday or Tuesday. I returned the Aero DAC. Not for me. I love my ZDSD
https://www.decware.com/newsite/ZDSDGUIDE.pdf
at 192k, Steve's transformer coupled RCA outputs with adjustable output to my ZMA. My 1300+ CD/redbook collection.....my brain is wired for this DAC direct to my ZMA. I'm reading the current Streamer threads here. I am not interested, really (but like to learn about it). I continue to buy physical CD's.

Stone, I’m so sorry it didn’t work out with the Aero DAC—you were so excited about it. What went wrong?

Yes, my enthusiasm never wanes. This is a very good DAC. However, harmonic overtones are not all there, and I like more air up top. You can check every other box for the DAC/wonderful. Thank goodness for Steve's output transformer design.

I don't want to discourage anyone from trying this DAC. LTA was excellent too.

Now, if snail mail finally delivers my 6SN7 adapters. I can get my Ray Tubes RESERVE 6SN7, in.

Well, I received the adapters yesterday and put the 6SN7 pair in my inputs. Four minutes in to warm up got a buzz bump (no thump) in the left channel that oscillated a bit and slight bump (not spike) on my bias meters (left channel). As you can figure I was baby sitting them closely with turn on. I shut things down immediately.

Now, the adapters do not fit flush because of the set screws that hold the tube sockets. Yet, tight enough you need your phone flashlight to see any pins. So, one would think they are in enough or so you think arcing is taking place?

Anyway, I am not going to mess with the socket screws integrity (if that is the problem). The tubes worked great in the DAC and the build quality of the adapters (externally at least) seems fine.

No harm to ZMA....as I write, I swtiched from my NOS Ediswan CV2492/6922 to my NOS Mullard 7308. In musical bliss with Joe Sample and Charles Lloyd.

Any thoughts? However, they are not going back in and I will shelve for now.

Have you checked the left channel tube to see if it had a failure since your right channel didn’t do the same? Using 6SN7’s in the 6922 spot does place a bit more demand on the 6SN7’s but they are robust tubes and should easily handle it.  They work fine in my Torii Jr.  As for the socket screws impacting the adapter base.  I marked the screw locations on the adapters and used a Dremel to grind notches in the plastic bases to allow them to sit flush.  No harm done to the adapters.

A socket saver will (usually) fit between the screws, if you don't want to grind on your adapter.

It looked robust and lit at shut down. However, I need to find in my metro a tube tester (good luck, right). I'll call around so I don't ask my ZMA to be one again.

Good ideas on both counts Hearafter and CAJames (Dremel or socket saver).

I have dremeled my 6SN7 adapters too, the plastic ones and metal wrapped ones, rarely using them here, but they fit well.

I should have called or emailed Steve and not assumed they are compatible with adapters in my ZMA. Thankfully, all is well. Has anyone run them in a ZMA? HK? I saw none in my search....but could have missed.

Stone,

I have never run them in the ZMA. Just have one in the front position of the CSP3 preamp with good effect.

I've been running Gold Lion KT77's in the ZMA, but recently put a quad of these in: https://www.thetubestore.com/shuguang-natural-sound-6ca7-t?quantity=4.

GroovySauce had recommended these tubes. Very holographic with a nice tight bass response too. Best I've heard so far in my set up.

Thanks CAJames and Lon. Usually, I'm pretty thorough with my searches. I read page 2 with Archie and Groovysauce with his brothers ZMA/photo. Maybe I need those spacers/socket savers or did the left tube go bad? Even though it looked fine at shutdown (does not mean it was okay).

I modified my recent post above. If the one tube is bad.....I should not be selling.

HK, nice tubes now on my radar list next. I love and running currently: Tung-Sol 7581A quad with 6N23P as inverters, NOS RCA OA3 with either my NOS Ediswans or NOS Mullard 7308. I was smart enough to buy two pair each platinum from Kevin/Upscale Audio. The Mull's you can still get ...I cherish my Ediswan 6922 (they're like the Mull's but on steroids).

Anyway, these Ray Tubes Reserve 6SN7 have a 1 yr warranty. I will find somewhere in the valley to test them with and without adapters. If pass I will sell. I am not willing to witness and risk my ZMA with what happened as metioned in post #59 above. If fail...I will send back under warranty (the pair need to be matched) and seek a different tube type replacement I can run.

Anyway, (reiterating my above post last paragraph).....

.....these Ray Tubes Reserve 6SN7 have a 1 yr warranty. I will find somewhere in the Valley to test them with and without adapters. If pass I will sell. I am not willing to apply socket savers, et al... in addition to the adapters and witness/risk my ZMA with what happened as mentioned in post #59 above.

If fail...I will send both back under warranty (the pair need to be matched) and request a different tube type replacement I can run. I am willing to get KT77 or EL34 available.

Great input NOS tubes to be had at Brent Jesse in the 4 to $500 price ranges/pair.
