Soldering Iron Question
03/26/25 at 19:58:01

If a guy were to begin building interconnect cables for himself, what type of reasonably priced soldering iron would he need? Specific iron recommendations will be appreciated.  Also, are there other necessary soldering tools that one really shouldn't be without?  Total budget:  Not more than $200 for all.
Thanks!  Doug

I am still a neophyte when it comes to soldering. This is what I'm using. Not sure the brands on anything besides the Weller. I bought a cheaper 3rd hand and it was a waste of money. After using a more expensive one I want an even nicer one.

Weller WE1010NA soldering station ~$115
Getting a good fume extractor to pull the nasty smoke away is a must! ~$30
Brass sponge ~$10?
3rd hand ~$60

Those are guesses and a little over budget. Hope that is useful.

i picked up one of these refurbed 7 years ago and haven't had any issues. I don't see any refurbs now, but this comes in under your budget, add some WBT silver solder and you're just over your budget. If you don't need the solder sucker gun, it's a bit cheaper.

I’ve had my Hakko for a long time now, and it’s a solid performer.  I would also pick up some Cardas Quad Eutectic silver solder and some paste flux.  The solder comes with flux in the solder, but I find that there are just those times that you need a bit more.  One pice of equipment I use a lot are the “Helping Hands”.
