Old SE 84 Potentiometer Recomendation
04/26/25 at 22:34:23

Hi All,

I have a old SE84 revision B (i think) which was sold as a kit.

The potentiometer (volume control) is bad,any recommendations for a quality replacement (part number)? The current is 100k and has a 10mm/ 3/8 bushing.

Thanks for all help.

Chris

My recent experience leads me to recommend Goldpoint stepped attenuators. I have a component with one and man. . .as far as transparency and feel and reputation for quality and reliability if it will fit within the amp I myself would choose a Goldpoint.

https://www.goldpt.com/compare.html

Available in 100K, not sure abut the shaft size etc. but I bet it would be available in those specs.

Hi, Chris. If you have any means of controlling the volume on your front end I recommend removing the pot altogether on your SE84 and run it wide open. No pot will be as transparent as no pot.

Sure, but my own experience does show this is excellent design and implementation and it is much more transparent than others I've used. It is quality not just over-priced.

That's my recommendation. If you are going to replace it why not replace it with something that is really good. That's what I would do. It will be better than the original and improve the amplifier sound overall. It may not "fit" however--it's a larger assembly.
